Consumer Credit Counselling Not a Quick Fix!

Consumer credit counseling will not be the quick fix that some think, but it is one of the best ways to clean up your financial picture for a stress free and debt free future. Most programs will take years to complete, but the time will depend on the amount of your debt and how much trouble you were in before you signed up for the program. If you are finding it difficult to pay your monthly payments, contact your credits and explain the situation. Many, though not all, will work with you to find a solution rather than risk no payment and a total loss. This is not true of all creditors, though, as some do not care and simply want their money. The best way to handle your debt and creditors is to pay off the most significant bill first followed by the others, one at a time. Temporarily terminate those bills that are not necessary, such as cable or satellite, other entertainment, or even the internet if not used for work, until your bills are paid. If you can curb your spending and rid of destructive financial habits, debt or credit consolidation may be an option.
These companies call credit card companies and other companies that their clients owe money to and negotiate payment schedules and sometimes even reduction in payments. The client pays them and they pay the credit companies, therefore minimizing the relationship between the client and the collectors. Do they help? It depends. If a person seriously follows a credit counseling services advice, closes out all of their credit cards, and really focuses on paying down their debts, then these services can help. However, if they just pay it off and leave the cards open, the temptation is there to use the cards again.
